2008-2009 Concert Calendar
Saturday October 24 - Beethoven's 3rd Symphony (1804) was originally written with Napoleon Bonaparte in mind, but the composer violently scratched out his name after Napoleon betrayed the ideals of the French Revolution, proclaiming himslef the Emperor of France. This grand symphony, with its sweeping, emotional melodies, continued Beethoven's remapping of the musical world and began the Romantic era in music. Mendelssohn's Hebride's Overture (1830) was intended to evoke the powerful beauty of the islands and caves Mendelssohn visited off the coast of Scotland. Listen for the crashing waves and feel the quiet solitude brought on by this musical holiday. Dorothy Kolinsky will join the orchestra on Schumann's Piano Concerto, the only one Schumann wrote, despite his wife, Clara, being one of the premier pianists of her time.
